Hulugan Falls is a majestic waterfall. Often paired with nearby Talay and Hidden Falls, it forms a popular tri-falls trek and is renowned for its impressive curtain-like cascades and refreshing natural pool. Here are the details:
LOCATION: Nestled in the highlands of Brgy. San Salvador, Luisiana, Laguna, the falls lie along the scenic Dapi River in the Sierra Madre foothills.
ENTRY POINT: Entrance and registration happen at the Captain’s House registration area in San Salvador. From there, visitors transfer via tricycle or a short walk to the trail head.
EXIT POINT: Hikers return via the same trail to the registration area, where they retrieve personal belongings and exit back to the road.
DIFFICULTY: The trail varies from a concrete pathway (~500 m) to rougher terrain. A steeper short trail is available for the adventurous (but muddy during rains), and the climb back can be taxing on the knees.
TREK DURATION: The trek to Talay Falls, Hidden Falls, and Hulugan Falls from the jump-off point in Brgy. San Salvador, Luisiana, Laguna typically takes 3 to 4 hours round trip, depending on your pace and time spent at each site. It usually begins with a 20 to 30-minute descent to Talay Falls, followed by a 10 to 15-minute walk to Hidden Falls. From there, it takes another 20 to 30 minutes to reach the majestic Hulugan Falls, with the trail becoming steeper and more challenging. After spending around 30 minutes to an hour swimming, relaxing, and taking photos, the return hike to the jump-off point takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes, as the path is mostly uphill and can be tiring.
Before traveling to Dingalan and visiting Tanawan Falls, it is important to coordinate with the local tourism office or guides for updated access information, permits, and transportation. Visitors should come prepared with essentials such as food, drinking water, sun protection, proper footwear, and extra clothing, especially when planning to explore areas like White Beach, the lighthouse view deck, and the adventure spots near Tanawan Falls. As always, practice Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the area’s natural beauty and to show respect for the local environment and communities.
